Scorpio and Aquarius: a square
Scorpio and Aquarius are a fixed water sign and a fixed air sign. Signs three apart form a square, traditionally a tense aspect. The two share a modality but differ in element, so they want similar things in different ways: both may want to lead, to hold firm or to keep their options open. That creates friction, but also attraction and energy. Astrologers say squares can be very productive when both sides learn to negotiate rather than compete.
Scorpio and Aquarius in love
Scorpio brings depth and loyalty: conversations go beyond the surface, and commitment is taken seriously. Aquarius brings originality and friendship: new perspectives, interesting people and plenty of freedom. Air and water are traditionally a difficult combination in love. Air approaches life through ideas and logic, water through feelings and intuition, so water may find air distant and air may find water too intense. When it works, air helps water put feelings into words, and water shows air a deeper emotional world. Patience and honest talks about feelings are key. In our model, love scores 39%.
Scorpio and Aquarius as friends and colleagues
Two fixed signs are both persistent, loyal and determined. Once they agree on a goal, few pairs are as dependable as friends or colleagues. The difficulty comes when they disagree: neither likes to give in, and a stalemate is possible. Agreeing on shared goals early and learning to compromise on details is the traditional advice. Friendship scores 43% and work 39% in our rule-based model. Friendship is the strongest of the three areas for this pair.
Where it can rub, and what helps
Scorpio can become suspicious or controlling and may hold on to a grudge. Aquarius can seem distant or stubborn and may retreat into ideas when feelings run high. Scorpio needs honesty and trust, and a partner who does not play games. Aquarius needs space, honesty and a partner who is also a real friend.

How the score is calculated
The score is rule-based and fully transparent. It starts from the angle between the two signs, using the traditional aspects of astrology: a trine (four signs apart, same element) scores 90, a sextile (two apart) 80, the same sign (conjunction) 68, an opposition 62, a semi-sextile (neighbouring signs) 52, a square (three apart) 45 and a quincunx (five apart) 42. Small adjustments are then made for the element pair and the modality pair, separately for love, friendship and work. The overall score is the average of the three.
Elements and modalities
Traditionally, fire and air are said to feed each other, as are earth and water, while fire with water or earth with air is considered harder going. Two fire signs get a bonus for passion and friendship, two earth signs for work. The modality adjustment looks at how two signs handle action: two cardinal signs may compete for the lead, while a cardinal and a fixed sign tend to divide work well, as one starts and the other finishes. The tool lists every adjustment, so you can see where each point comes from.
What the score can and cannot tell you
The calculator compares Sun signs only. It does not use birth charts, so it says nothing about the Moon, Venus, the rising sign or anything else astrologers would look at for a full synastry. More importantly, astrology has no scientific basis: no study has shown that zodiac signs predict whether two people get along. Treat the score as entertainment and a fun way to talk about relationships. Real compatibility depends on communication, shared values and effort, not on birth dates.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
By the traditional rules used here, signs of the same element (a trine), such as Aries and Leo or Taurus and Virgo, score highest, followed by sextiles such as Aries and Gemini.
Are Aries and Leo compatible?
Yes, by traditional rules they are one of the best matches: two fire signs four apart, forming a trine. Open the Aries and Leo page for the full breakdown.
Can two people with the same sign be compatible?
Yes. Same-sign pairs score in the middle range: they understand each other easily but also share the same weak spots.
Why is the score different on other websites?
There is no standard formula. This tool uses published, traditional rules and shows each step, so you can see exactly how the number is reached.
Does the calculator use my birth chart?
No. It only compares the two Sun signs. For your planetary positions, use the birth chart calculator.
