What makes a good URL slug
Short, lowercase, descriptive, words separated by hyphens: /blue-running-shoes beats /p?id=4821 and /Blue_Running_Shoes_2026_New. Google recommends hyphens over underscores to separate words. Keep slugs to around 3–6 meaningful words, drop filler like “a”, “the” and “of”, and avoid dates or numbers you will have to change later, so the URL can stay stable for years.
Transliteration for every language
Non-ASCII characters in URLs get percent-encoded (ü becomes %C3%BC), which looks broken when shared. This tool transliterates them properly: German ä→ae, ö→oe, ü→ue, ß→ss; Turkish ç→c, ğ→g, ı→i, ş→s; Spanish á→a, ñ→n; French and Polish accents are stripped; Russian Cyrillic uses a GOST/Yandex-style scheme (ж→zh, х→kh, ц→ts, щ→shch, я→ya); Arabic gets a basic romanization.
Changing existing slugs
Slugs on pages that already rank or have backlinks should only change for a strong reason. If you do change them, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one (our 301 redirect generator writes the rule) and update internal links, or you will lose traffic.
Frequently asked questions
Hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while underscores can join words together (blue_shoes may be read as “blueshoes”).
Should I remove stop words from slugs?
Usually, yes, for shorter URLs. Keep them when removing changes the meaning, e.g. “to-be-or-not-to-be”.
How long should a slug be?
There is no hard limit, but 3–6 words (roughly under 60 characters) keeps URLs readable and fully visible in search results.
Should keywords be in the URL?
Including the main topic helps users and is a very minor signal. Don’t stuff several keywords in.
