What is a Moon sign?
In Western astrology, the Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. While the Sun sign is linked with your core identity, astrologers associate the Moon with emotions, instincts and what makes you feel at home. Together with the rising sign, it is one of the “big three” of a birth chart. The calculator shows a short traditional description for each Moon sign. Astrology has no scientific basis, so read these descriptions for entertainment, not as facts about your personality.
Why your birth time matters
The Moon moves fast: about 13° a day, so it changes sign roughly every two and a half days. If the Moon entered a new sign on your birthday, your Moon sign depends on whether you were born before or after that moment. The tool detects this, warns you and shows the exact time of the change, so you can compare it with the time on your birth certificate. Without a time, you can still try a morning and an evening time to see whether the result changes.
How it is calculated
Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time using the historical time zone rules for that place, including daylight saving time in the year you were born. The positions of the Moon and Sun are then computed in your browser with the open-source astronomy-engine library, which is accurate to around an arcminute, far more than needed to determine a sign. The Moon phase is derived from the angle between the Sun and Moon, and its illumination is shown as a percentage. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.
