How Turkish severance pay (kıdem tazminatı) works
An employee with at least one year of service with the same employer receives 30 days’ gross wage for each full year worked, with remaining months and days paid pro rata. The wage used is the “dressed” gross wage (giydirilmiş ücret): the base salary plus recurring benefits such as transport, meals and regular bonuses. Severance pay is exempt from income tax and SGK; only stamp duty of 0.759% is deducted. Example: 5 years on 60,000 TRY gross gives 300,000 TRY gross severance, minus 2,277 TRY stamp duty, or 297,723 TRY net.
The 2026 severance ceiling
Severance per year of service cannot exceed a ceiling tied to the maximum retirement bonus of a senior civil servant. It is updated every January and July. For 2026 the calculator uses 64,948.77 TRY for terminations from 1 January to 30 June and 73,729.87 TRY from 1 July to 31 December. If your dressed wage is higher, the ceiling is used instead and the result says so. Termination dates outside 2026 fall back to the nearest 2026 period, so check such results separately.
Notice periods and notice pay (ihbar tazminatı)
If the employment contract is ended without the statutory notice, the other party owes notice pay equal to the wage for the notice period. Under Article 17 of Labour Law No. 4857 the periods are: under 6 months of service 2 weeks; 6 months to 1.5 years 4 weeks; 1.5 to 3 years 6 weeks; over 3 years 8 weeks. Notice pay has no ceiling and, unlike severance pay, is subject to income tax as well as stamp duty (no SGK). The calculator uses the cumulative tax base you enter to find the right bracket.
Who is entitled
Severance is typically due when the employer dismisses an employee without just cause, when the employee resigns for just cause (for example unpaid wages), for military service, retirement, or within one year of marriage for women. A plain resignation usually does not qualify. Eligibility and collective agreement terms are not assessed by the tool — foreign employees and employers should confirm with a Turkish employment lawyer before relying on the figures.
