How to use
- 1Choose a country: United States, United Kingdom (England & Wales), Germany, Spain, Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia or the UAE.
- 2Pick “Between two dates” or “Add business days”.
- 3Enter the dates, or a start date and a number of business days (negative counts backwards).
- 4Read the result and the list of public holidays that fall in the range.
US federal holidays and observed days
For the United States the calculator uses the 11 federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Following OPM rules, a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before and one on a Sunday on the Monday after; these observed days are tagged in the list. When New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday, the observed day is December 31 of the previous year. State holidays and one-off closures are not included.
UK bank holidays (England & Wales)
The UK option covers the eight regular bank holidays in England and Wales: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday, the spring bank holiday, the summer bank holiday in late August, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. When one falls on a weekend, the substitute day is the next free weekday, as on gov.uk. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different holidays, and one-off bank holidays declared for special occasions are not included.
How business days are counted
In “Between two dates” mode both the start and the end date are counted (untick “Include end date” to leave the end out). The calendar days are broken down into business days, weekend days and weekday holidays, so a holiday on a Saturday isn’t subtracted twice. In “Add business days” mode the start date itself is not counted: 10 business days from a Friday lands on the Friday two weeks later if no holiday intervenes. Use a negative number to count backwards, for example to find the last day to file before a deadline.
Frequently asked questions
How many business days are in a year?
A year has 260 or 261 weekdays. After subtracting the US federal holidays, about 250 remain. Enter January 1 to December 31 to get the exact figure for any year.
Is the start date counted?
When counting between two dates, yes — both ends are included by default. When adding business days, no: day 1 is the next business day after the start date.
Does it include state holidays?
For Germany you can select a state. For the US only federal holidays are included, so subtract state holidays such as Patriots’ Day or Cesar Chavez Day yourself.
Are weekends always Saturday and Sunday?
For most countries, yes. For Saudi Arabia the calculator uses a Friday–Saturday weekend; the UAE uses Saturday–Sunday.
