IBAN Validator

Check whether an IBAN is correctly formed before you send money, and see what each part of it means.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Paste an IBAN — spaces and lower case are fine.
  2. 2See instantly whether it is valid, with the country and check digits.
  3. 3Read the bank code (e.g. UK sort code, German BLZ) and account part, formatted in groups of four.
  4. 4For several IBANs, switch to batch mode and paste one per line.

How IBAN validation works

An IBAN starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by the national bank and account number. Each country has a fixed length — 22 characters for the UK, Ireland and Germany, 27 for France. The validator checks the length for the country, then runs the ISO 7064 mod-97 test: the first four characters are moved to the end, letters are turned into numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35), and the result divided by 97 must leave a remainder of 1. This catches almost all typos and swapped digits.

What a valid IBAN does — and doesn’t — prove

A valid result means the IBAN is correctly formed, not that the account exists, is open or belongs to the person you expect. The check runs entirely in your browser without contacting any bank. Since October 2025, payment service providers in the eurozone must offer Verification of Payee (a name check) for euro transfers, and UK banks use Confirmation of Payee — rely on those checks, not on IBAN validity, to spot invoice fraud.

Reading the parts of an IBAN

In a UK IBAN such as GB33 BUKB 2020 1555 5555 55, BUKB is the bank identifier, 202015 the sort code and 55555555 the account number. In a German IBAN (DE + 2 check digits + 8-digit BLZ + 10-digit account number) the tool shows the Bankleitzahl separately. IBANs are printed in groups of four for readability, but are stored and sent without spaces. The US, Canada and Australia do not use IBANs.

Frequently asked questions

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. It only confirms the format and check digits are correct. Only the bank can confirm the account and its holder.

How long is an IBAN?

It depends on the country: from 15 characters (Norway) up to 30 or more for a few countries. UK and German IBANs have 22.

Do US bank accounts have an IBAN?

No. The US uses routing and account numbers; for international transfers you also need the bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.

Is my IBAN sent anywhere?

No. Validation happens entirely in your browser.
