Online Metronome

Keep perfect time with an accurate online metronome — set the BPM or tap it in, choose a time signature and start practising.

Tempo (BPM)
100

Shortcuts: Space start/stop · T tap tempo · ↑/↓ ±1 BPM

Clicks are scheduled ahead on the Web Audio clock, so timing stays steady even when the tab is in the background.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Set the tempo with the slider or the −/+ buttons, or tap it in with “Tap tempo”.
  2. 2Choose a time signature and, optionally, a subdivision.
  3. 3Press Start; the dots show each beat, with the first beat accented.
  4. 4Use Space to start/stop, T to tap and ↑/↓ to change the BPM by one.

Accurate timing in the browser

Simple web metronomes use JavaScript timers, which drift and stutter when the page is busy or in a background tab. This metronome schedules every click slightly ahead on the Web Audio clock, the same sample-accurate clock used for audio playback, so the beat stays steady even if you switch tabs. The visual beat follows the audio.

Time signatures and odd meters

Choose 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 or 6/8, or the odd (aksak) meters common in Balkan and Turkish music: 7/8 grouped 2+2+3 or 3+2+2, and 9/8 grouped 2+2+2+3 or 3+3+3. The first beat of the bar gets the strongest accent and the start of each group a lighter one, so you can feel the grouping. Turn off “Accent first beat” for an even click.

Tempo, subdivisions and tap tempo

The tempo range is 20–300 BPM, with the Italian tempo name (Largo, Adagio, Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Presto) shown for the current BPM. Subdivisions add quieter clicks for eighths, triplets or sixteenths — useful for practising at slow tempos or keeping fast passages even. Tap tempo averages your last few taps to find the BPM of a song you are listening to.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Press “Tap tempo” (or the T key) in time with the beat for several taps; the metronome sets the BPM from the average interval.

What BPM should I practise at?

Start slow enough to play cleanly, then raise the tempo by a few BPM at a time. Accuracy at a slower tempo builds speed faster than rushing.

Does it keep time in a background tab?

Yes. Clicks are scheduled on the Web Audio clock, so timing stays steady when you switch tabs.

How do I practise in 7/8?

Choose 7/8 with the grouping you need (2+2+3 or 3+2+2). The accents mark the start of each group.
