This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Type or paste text to get its binary code — or paste binary to decode it.
  2. 2Hex, octal and decimal bytes are shown at the same time — copy any of them, or type into any field to convert back.
  3. 3Use the ASCII table to look up individual characters.
  4. 4For numbers, use the base converter: base 2, 8, 10, 16, 36 or any custom base from 2 to 36.

How text becomes binary

Computers store text as bytes. The translator encodes your text as UTF-8 and shows each byte as an 8-bit group: the letter A is code 65, which is 01000001 in binary, 41 in hex and 101 in octal. Plain English letters, digits and punctuation take one byte each, matching ASCII. Accented letters, other scripts and emoji take two to four bytes in UTF-8, so “é” becomes two 8-bit groups and an emoji four.

Decoding binary to text

Paste binary as groups of eight bits separated by spaces, and the tool turns each group back into a byte and decodes the bytes as UTF-8. A continuous string of bits is split into groups of eight automatically. If a value exceeds 255 or the bytes are not valid UTF-8, the tool shows an error — usually a sign that a digit is missing or the source used a different encoding.

Number base converter

The base converter turns whole numbers between binary (base 2), octal (8), decimal (10), hexadecimal (16), base 36 and any custom base from 2 to 36. It uses BigInt arithmetic, so very long numbers convert exactly without rounding. This is handy for reading bit masks, file permissions such as 755, colour codes, memory addresses and short IDs.

Frequently asked questions

What is “hello” in binary?

01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 — one 8-bit byte per letter.

Why are some characters longer than 8 bits?

In UTF-8, characters outside basic ASCII — accented letters, non-Latin scripts and emoji — use two to four bytes.

How do I convert binary to decimal?

Each bit is a power of two, from 1 on the right. 1011 = 8 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 11. The base converter does it instantly.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All conversions run in your browser.
