Video to GIF Converter

Pick a short clip from a video, set the frame rate and size, and create a crisp GIF with a custom colour palette — entirely in your browser.

Estimated size: – (rough estimate; grows with motion and colour)

🔒 Your video is never uploaded: the GIF is created entirely in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Drag a video file onto the page or click to choose one (MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV…).
  2. 2Play the preview and use “Start = now” and “End = now”, or type the seconds, to set the range.
  3. 3Choose the frame rate (FPS), width and dithering, and check the estimated size.
  4. 4Click “Create GIF”, preview the result and download it.

Two-pass palette for better GIFs

A GIF can show at most 256 colours. This tool uses ffmpeg’s palettegen/paletteuse method: first it builds the best 256-colour palette for your clip, then it encodes the GIF with that palette. That greatly reduces the banding and colour shifts you get from basic converters. “Smooth” dithering looks most natural; “None” gives the smallest file.

Keeping the file small

GIF size grows with duration × frame rate × pixel count. For social media, chat apps and email, 3–6 seconds at 10–12 FPS and 320–480 px wide is usually enough. GIFs longer than about 15 seconds can reach tens of megabytes — a short MP4 is often the better choice then. The size estimate is rough: more motion and colour means a bigger file.

Your video stays on your device

The GIF is created in your browser with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm). The engine is downloaded once (about 10 MB) and cached. Audio isn’t included in GIFs, and you can select up to 60 seconds. If the chosen width is larger than the video, it isn’t upscaled.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn an iPhone video (MOV) into a GIF?

Yes. Common formats such as MOV, MP4, WEBM and MKV work. Even if your browser can’t preview the file, you can type the start and end seconds and create the GIF.

Can a GIF have sound?

No, the GIF format has no audio. Share a short MP4 if you need sound.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF compression is far less efficient than video. Shorten the clip, lower the FPS to 8–10, reduce the width to 320–480 px or set dithering to “None”.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm; the video never leaves your device.

Will the GIF loop?

Yes, while “Loop forever” is ticked. Untick it and the GIF plays once and stops on the last frame.
