Unlock PDF — Remove PDF Password

Save a copy of a password-protected PDF that opens without asking for the password — text and links are kept and the file never leaves your device.

Decryption runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of the open-source qpdf. Pages are not turned into images: text, links, form fields and bookmarks are kept. The file and the password never leave your device.

Use this only for documents you are entitled to open and whose password you know. This tool does not crack or guess passwords.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Drop the protected PDF or click to choose it.
  2. 2The tool shows whether the file has an open password or only restrictions.
  3. 3Enter the password if needed and click “Remove password”.
  4. 4Download the unlocked PDF.

Open password vs. permissions password

PDFs can carry two kinds of protection. A user (open) password is required to view the file at all — bank statements, payslips and tax documents are often sent this way. An owner (permissions) password lets anyone open the file but blocks printing, copying text or editing. The tool detects which one your file has as soon as you choose it; restrictions alone can be removed without typing anything.

Lossless decryption

Decryption runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of qpdf, a well-known open-source PDF tool. Pages are not rasterised, so text remains selectable and searchable and links, form fields and bookmarks survive. PDFs encrypted with 40/128-bit RC4 and 128/256-bit AES are supported.

Legal and safety note

This is not a password cracker: without the open password the file cannot be unlocked. Use it only for documents you own or are entitled to open. Neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere. Before sharing the unlocked copy, remember the password may have been there to protect personal data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

Not if it has an open password — the tool does not guess or crack passwords. Permission restrictions (printing, copying) can be removed without a password.

Will the unlocked PDF still have selectable text?

Yes. The pages are not converted to images; text, links and forms stay intact.

Is my password sent to a server?

No. Decryption happens entirely in your browser; neither the file nor the password leaves your device.

Which encryption types are supported?

Standard PDF encryption: RC4 40/128-bit and AES 128/256-bit, as used by Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and most banks.

Why do I get “Wrong password”?

Check upper/lower case, the keyboard layout and stray spaces. If the password was emailed to you, try copying and pasting it.
