How to use
- 1Enter the address of the page you want to test (e.g. example.com).
- 2Pick mobile or desktop. Google ranks pages based on the mobile result.
- 3Press “Test speed”; the measurement takes 20–40 seconds.
- 4Review the scores, LCP/CLS/TBT values and the improvement opportunities.
Why website speed matters
Load time affects both rankings and revenue. Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal, and on mobile a large share of visitors leave before a page that takes more than three seconds has even loaded. In Google Ads, a slow landing page lowers Quality Score and raises your cost per click.
What the Core Web Vitals mean
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) is how long the largest element takes to appear and should be under 2.5 seconds. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures how much the layout jumps while loading; under 0.1 is good. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) is how quickly the page reacts to input; aim for under 200 ms. Lab tests show TBT (Total Blocking Time) as a stand-in for INP.
The most effective ways to speed up a site
Converting images to WebP/AVIF and compressing them, removing unused JavaScript and CSS, deferring third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics, ad tags) and cutting server response time (TTFB) with caching and a CDN typically adds 20–40 points. Frequently asked questions
Is the website speed test free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no signup and you can test as many pages as you like.
Why are the mobile and desktop scores different?
The mobile test simulates a slower phone CPU and a 4G connection, so mobile scores are usually lower. Google ranks the mobile version, so the mobile score should be your priority.
Why does the score change slightly between runs?
Server response time, network conditions and third-party scripts vary on every run. A swing of 3–5 points is normal; run a few tests and look at the average.
What is a good score?
90–100 is good, 50–89 needs improvement and 0–49 is poor. For rankings, though, what matters most is that real-user (CrUX) LCP, INP and CLS are rated “good”.
