  • Zakat is due once nisab-level wealth has been held for one lunar (Hijri) year, which is about 354 days.
  • The amount of zakat al-fitr is announced each year by official religious bodies; check your local authority’s announcement.
  • This tool only does the arithmetic. Which assets count and which nisab standard applies can differ between schools of thought and personal circumstances; consult a qualified religious authority for details.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Enter cash and bank balances.
  2. 2Enter gold and silver in grams with today’s price per gram, plus investments, receivables and business inventory.
  3. 3Enter short-term debts to deduct and choose the nisab standard (gold 85 g or silver 595 g).
  4. 4Read your net zakatable wealth, the nisab threshold, your status and the zakat amount.

How zakat is calculated

The calculator adds cash, bank accounts, the value of gold and silver (grams × price per gram), investments such as shares, funds and foreign currency, receivables you expect to be repaid and business inventory, then subtracts short-term debts. If the result is at or above the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of it — one-fortieth. For example, net zakatable wealth of $20,000 gives $500 zakat. All amounts must be in the same currency.

Nisab: gold or silver standard

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat becomes due. It is commonly set at 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Because silver is much cheaper, the silver standard gives a far lower threshold, so more people meet it. Choose the standard you follow and enter the current price per gram for that metal — the tool does not fetch market prices, so use a local dealer’s or bank’s price on the day you calculate.

The lunar year (hawl) and what counts

Zakat is due once wealth at or above the nisab has been held for one lunar (Hijri) year, about 354 days, so many people calculate it on the same Hijri date each year. Which assets count — for example retirement accounts, personal jewelry or long-term debts — differs between schools of thought and personal circumstances. This tool only does the arithmetic; for rulings, consult a qualified religious authority or your local Islamic organisation. The amount of zakat al-fitr is announced separately each year by official bodies.

Frequently asked questions

How much is zakat?

2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, if it is at or above the nisab and has been held for a lunar year.

What is the nisab amount today?

Multiply the current price per gram by 85 for gold or by 595 for silver. Enter today’s price in the calculator to see the threshold in your currency.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Opinions differ. The silver standard is lower, so more wealth becomes zakatable; follow the standard your school or local scholars recommend.

Are debts deducted from zakat?

The calculator deducts the short-term debts you enter. How to treat long-term debts such as a mortgage differs between scholars.
