How to use

  1. 1Enter the amount, e.g. 1,234.50.
  2. 2Pick the currency (dollar, pound, euro…) or “plain number”.
  3. 3Choose US style (one hundred five) or UK style (one hundred and five).
  4. 4Copy the words or the check format (… and 50/100 dollars).

How to write a check amount in words

On a US check the dollar amount is written in words and the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,234.50 → “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100”, followed by the printed word Dollars. Start writing at the far left of the line and draw a line through the unused space so nothing can be added. Under the Uniform Commercial Code (§ 3-114) the words prevail if they differ from the figures, so the written amount is the one that counts.

US and UK spelling rules

Numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated (twenty-one, ninety-nine). American usage leaves out “and” (one hundred five), British usage puts it before the tens and units (one hundred and five, two thousand and one). Large numbers use the short scale: million = 10⁶, billion = 10⁹, trillion = 10¹². The converter supports amounts up to 999 trillion and decimals for plain numbers (12.5 → twelve point five).

Other languages

Switch the output language to write the same amount in Turkish, German, Spanish (Mexican check style with M.N.), Arabic (tafqeet with correct number–noun agreement) or Russian (rubles and kopecks with proper declension) — useful for export invoices and bilingual contracts. All conversion runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write $1,500 on a check?

“One thousand five hundred and 00/100” on the amount line; the word Dollars is usually pre-printed at the end of the line.

Do I write “and” in one hundred and five?

In the US the “and” is reserved for the cents (and 50/100), so write “one hundred five”. In the UK “one hundred and five” is standard.
