What structured data does
Schema.org markup describes your page in a machine-readable way: this is a product with this price, this is a business with these opening hours. Google uses it to understand entities and to show rich results such as product price and rating stars, breadcrumbs, event dates and organization logos. JSON-LD is Google’s recommended format because it sits in one script block, separate from your HTML.
Which type to use where
Organization (or LocalBusiness for a physical location with address, phone and opening hours) on the homepage or about page; WebSite on the homepage; Article or BlogPosting on posts; Product with Offer and AggregateRating on product pages; BreadcrumbList on every page with a breadcrumb trail; Event for dated events; Person for author or profile pages; FAQPage and HowTo for pages whose main content is genuinely Q&A or step-by-step instructions.
Rich result eligibility in 2026
Markup is never a guarantee. Google restricted FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023 and dropped HowTo rich results, and the sitelinks search box was retired in 2024. These types are still valid schema that helps search engines and AI systems understand the page, but don’t expect special snippets from them. Mark up only content that is visible on the page — hidden or misleading markup can trigger a manual action.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put the JSON-LD code?
Anywhere in the page’s HTML, usually in the <head> or just before </body>. Google reads it in either place, including when injected by JavaScript.
Can I use several schema types on one page?
Yes. A product page can have Product, BreadcrumbList and Organization markup together, as separate script blocks or one @graph.
How do I test my structured data?
Use Google’s Rich Results Test for rich result eligibility and the Schema Markup Validator (validator.schema.org) for general schema.org validity.
Do review stars show for my own business reviews?
No. Google doesn’t show self-serving review stars for LocalBusiness or Organization markup about your own business.
