Cancer and Scorpio: a trine
Cancer and Scorpio are a cardinal water sign and a fixed water sign. Signs four apart form a trine, the most harmonious aspect in astrology. They share the same element, so they are said to understand each other’s basic needs and temperament almost without words, and the relationship tends to feel easy and natural. The only traditional warning is complacency: with so little friction, it is worth keeping things fresh and challenging each other now and then.
Cancer and Scorpio in love
Cancer brings warmth and loyalty: a feeling of being looked after and a home where everyone is welcome. Scorpio brings depth and loyalty: conversations go beyond the surface, and commitment is taken seriously. Two water signs are said to understand each other on a deep emotional level, often without words. Romance tends to be tender, intuitive and intimate, with a strong sense of being cared for. The traditional risk is that moods amplify each other, or that both avoid saying difficult things. An outside perspective now and then, and clear words, help keep the relationship balanced. In our model, love scores 98%.
Cancer and Scorpio as friends and colleagues
A cardinal and a fixed sign are said to combine well in practical matters: the cardinal sign starts things and the fixed sign carries them through, a division that can work very well at work. Friction comes when the cardinal side wants to change direction and the fixed side wants to stick to the plan, so it helps to agree early on when a change of course makes sense. Friendship scores 94% and work 90% in our rule-based model. Love is the strongest of the three areas for this pair.
Where it can rub, and what helps
Cancer can take things personally and withdraw instead of saying what hurt. Scorpio can become suspicious or controlling and may hold on to a grudge. Cancer needs emotional security, with a partner or friend who is reliable and shows their feelings. Scorpio needs honesty and trust, and a partner who does not play games.

How the score is calculated
The score is rule-based and fully transparent. It starts from the angle between the two signs, using the traditional aspects of astrology: a trine (four signs apart, same element) scores 90, a sextile (two apart) 80, the same sign (conjunction) 68, an opposition 62, a semi-sextile (neighbouring signs) 52, a square (three apart) 45 and a quincunx (five apart) 42. Small adjustments are then made for the element pair and the modality pair, separately for love, friendship and work. The overall score is the average of the three.
Elements and modalities
Traditionally, fire and air are said to feed each other, as are earth and water, while fire with water or earth with air is considered harder going. Two fire signs get a bonus for passion and friendship, two earth signs for work. The modality adjustment looks at how two signs handle action: two cardinal signs may compete for the lead, while a cardinal and a fixed sign tend to divide work well, as one starts and the other finishes. The tool lists every adjustment, so you can see where each point comes from.
What the score can and cannot tell you
The calculator compares Sun signs only. It does not use birth charts, so it says nothing about the Moon, Venus, the rising sign or anything else astrologers would look at for a full synastry. More importantly, astrology has no scientific basis: no study has shown that zodiac signs predict whether two people get along. Treat the score as entertainment and a fun way to talk about relationships. Real compatibility depends on communication, shared values and effort, not on birth dates.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
By the traditional rules used here, signs of the same element (a trine), such as Aries and Leo or Taurus and Virgo, score highest, followed by sextiles such as Aries and Gemini.
Are Aries and Leo compatible?
Yes, by traditional rules they are one of the best matches: two fire signs four apart, forming a trine. Open the Aries and Leo page for the full breakdown.
Can two people with the same sign be compatible?
Yes. Same-sign pairs score in the middle range: they understand each other easily but also share the same weak spots.
Why is the score different on other websites?
There is no standard formula. This tool uses published, traditional rules and shows each step, so you can see exactly how the number is reached.
Does the calculator use my birth chart?
No. It only compares the two Sun signs. For your planetary positions, use the birth chart calculator.
