What is RAL Classic?
RAL Classic is the four-digit colour standard published by RAL gGmbH in Germany and used widely for paint, powder coating, window profiles, cladding and signage. The first digit gives the family: 1 yellow and beige, 2 orange, 3 red, 4 violet, 5 blue, 6 green, 7 grey, 8 brown and 9 white and black. Codes such as RAL 7016 Anthracite grey, RAL 9010 Pure white and RAL 9005 Jet black are among the most requested for windows, doors and metalwork.
Why HEX and RGB values are approximate
RAL colours are defined by physical reference samples, and there is no official HEX or RGB equivalent. The values here are screen approximations from an MIT-licensed open data set and will look different on different monitors. Use them for websites, presentations and mock-ups; when ordering paint or powder coating quote only the code (for example “RAL 7016”) and make decisions against an official printed RAL colour card.
Finding the nearest RAL to your colour
Enter the HEX or RGB of a colour from a photo or website. The tool converts it to CIELAB and calculates the CIEDE2000 colour difference (ΔE), which tracks human perception better than simple RGB distance, to every RAL Classic colour. Below a ΔE of about 2 colours look almost identical on screen; above 5 the difference is obvious. Colours in photos are strongly affected by lighting, so confirm the result with a physical sample.
Frequently asked questions
What colour is RAL 7016?
RAL 7016 is Anthracite grey, a dark grey with a slightly blue cast. Its approximate screen HEX value is #373F43. It is very common for window frames, doors and cladding.
Is there an official HEX code for RAL colours?
No. RAL colours are defined by physical samples, so HEX and RGB values are only approximations for screens. Always compare with an official RAL colour card before ordering.
How many RAL Classic colours are there?
This chart lists 215 RAL Classic colours. RAL adds colours from time to time, so check the official RAL website for the latest list.
Is RAL the same as Pantone or NCS?
No, they are separate colour systems without exact one-to-one equivalents. This tool covers RAL Classic only.
How do I convert HEX to RAL?
Enter the HEX value under “Nearest RAL to my colour”. You get the five closest RAL Classic colours with their ΔE difference; treat the result as a starting point and check a physical sample.
