Where the rates come from

Rates are based on the euro reference rates published by the European Central Bank on working days, supplemented by the Central Bank of Russia for currencies such as RUB, KZT, BYN and UAH. The Saudi riyal and UAE dirham are derived from their official US dollar pegs (3.75 SAR and 3.6725 AED per dollar). Cross rates such as GBP to USD are calculated through the euro. The page shows the date of the rates and the source, plus a 30-day chart for pairs covered by the ECB.

Why your bank gives a different rate

Reference rates are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buying and selling prices. Banks, card issuers and exchange bureaus add a spread on top of that rate and sometimes a fixed fee, so the amount you actually receive is usually lower. Use the converter to see what a fair rate looks like, then compare it with the rate and fees your provider quotes. The rates are for information only and not for trading.

Weekends and holidays

Central banks do not publish reference rates on weekends and public holidays, so the most recent working-day rate is shown until a new one is available. Real-time market prices keep moving in the meantime, especially for volatile currencies.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the exchange rates updated?

The reference rates are published once per working day; the converter fetches the latest available set and caches it for up to an hour.

Is this the rate I will get at my bank?

Usually not. Banks and card providers add a margin and fees to the mid-market rate, so compare their offer with this rate.

Can I convert between two non-euro currencies?

Yes. Pairs such as USD to JPY or GBP to INR are calculated as cross rates via the euro.

Can I use these rates for trading or accounting?

They are for information only. For accounting, use the official rate required by your tax authority or auditor.
