Airport Code Lookup

How to use

  1. 1Type a 3-letter IATA code (e.g. LHR), a 4-letter ICAO code (e.g. KJFK), a city or an airport name.
  2. 2Pick the right airport from the results table — airports in the same city are listed separately.
  3. 3Check the coordinates, elevation (ft and m), time zone and live local time on the card.
  4. 4See runway designators, lengths and surfaces in the runway table, and open the location in OpenStreetMap.

IATA vs ICAO airport codes

The IATA code is the 3-letter code assigned by the International Air Transport Association — the one printed on tickets, bag tags and departure boards (LHR, JFK, DXB). The ICAO code is the 4-letter code from the International Civil Aviation Organization, used by pilots, air traffic control and weather reports such as METARs. ICAO codes follow a regional pattern: UK airports start with EG (Heathrow is EGLL), airports in the contiguous United States usually add a K to the IATA code (JFK becomes KJFK), and Canadian ones start with C (Toronto Pearson is CYYZ).

What the airport card shows

For each airport you get the name, city, country, IATA and ICAO codes, coordinates in degrees-minutes-seconds and decimal format, elevation in feet and metres, the IANA time zone and the current local time. Where runway data exists, every runway is listed with its designator, length in metres and feet, and surface (asphalt, concrete, grass and so on). A link opens the airport in OpenStreetMap. The search runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Data source and coverage

The search covers 3,244 airports with an IATA code and scheduled service from the public-domain OurAirports database, with time zones from the MIT-licensed mwgg/Airports dataset. 337 major airports also have their own pages with full runway details and distances to the nearest other major airports. Codes and runway data change from time to time, so always use the official AIP for operational purposes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an IATA and an ICAO code?

IATA codes have 3 letters and are used for passenger travel — tickets, bookings and baggage. ICAO codes have 4 letters and are used in air traffic control, flight plans and aviation weather.

Why does London have so many airport codes?

Each airport has its own code: LHR (Heathrow), LGW (Gatwick), STN (Stansted), LTN (Luton), LCY (City) and SEN (Southend). LON is a city code that groups them for searching flights.

Why do US ICAO codes start with K?

In the contiguous United States most ICAO codes are the IATA code with a K prefix, such as KLAX and KORD. Alaska and Hawaii use PA and PH instead.

Can I search by city name?

Yes. Type part of a city or airport name — accents are optional — and the matching airports appear with their codes and country.
